Cry Translate is built so that your baby's cries stay on your phone. This policy explains exactly what the app processes, the two narrow cases in which data leaves your device, and the choices you have. It applies to the Cry Translate mobile app for iOS and Android, operated by Attention AI (Thailand) Co., Ltd.
1. What the app processes on your device
- Microphone audio. When you start an analysis, the app records about 7 seconds of audio into memory. The recording is analysed by a machine-learning model running on your phone and is then discarded. It is never written to your device's storage and never uploaded, unless you explicitly choose to share it (see section 2).
- Analysis results. The suggested cry meaning and the time of the analysis are stored locally on your device so you can review them. They are not sent anywhere.
- Usage counter. The free tier allows 3 analyses per day. The counter is stored locally on your device and resets at midnight (your local time).
- Settings. Your preferences (such as the sharing mode described below) are stored locally on your device.
The app has no user accounts and no sign-in. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, location, or contacts. The app contains no advertising SDKs and no third-party analytics SDKs.
2. When data leaves your device
Exactly two kinds of data can leave your device, and only in the circumstances below. Nothing else is transmitted.
2.1 Optional, anonymous cry donation (opt-in)
You can choose to share a recording to help improve the AI — for example by tapping "Help improve Cry Translate" on a result, or by submitting a correction. Nothing is ever shared unless you take that action; recordings are never sent on their own. When you share, we receive:
- the 7-second audio recording,
- your baby's age range (e.g. 3–6 months) — never a birth date, and
- optionally, what you told us the cry meant (your correction label).
No name, no account, and no identifier that could link the recording to you or your device is stored with it.
Donated recordings are uploaded to our server in the European Union and retained in raw form for up to 90 days before being processed into the training corpus.
To keep the model fair, we only collect cries from babies without diagnosed conditions affecting the voice. The app asks about this before the first share and excludes recordings of premature or medically complex babies from donation.
You control sharing at all times in the app's settings: choose Ask each time, Share automatically (shares when you tap the share action or submit a correction, without a confirmation dialog each time), or Never share. Selecting "Never share" stops all future donations and deletes any recordings still waiting on your device to be sent.
2.2 Purchases
Payments for Cry Translate Plus are processed entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We never see your payment card or billing details. To validate purchases and unlock Plus across reinstalls, we use RevenueCat (a payments-infrastructure provider acting as our subprocessor). RevenueCat receives purchase receipts and an anonymous, device-scoped identifier — not your name, email, or any account information, because the app has none.
3. Data retention
- Cry audio (analysis): held in memory for the duration of the analysis only; never stored.
- Analysis history, counters, settings: stored on your device until you delete them or uninstall the app.
- Donated recordings (queued): stored on your device for up to two weeks until sent, then deleted from the device. Deleted immediately if you choose "Never share".
- Donated recordings (server): retained in raw form for up to 90 days, then processed into the anonymous training corpus.
- Purchase records: retained by Apple/Google and RevenueCat per their own policies, for as long as needed to honour your purchase.
4. Children's data
Cry Translate is made for parents and caregivers. It is not directed at children and has no child-facing features or interactions. The app processes the sound of a baby's cry on the parent's device; that audio stays on the device unless the parent or caregiver explicitly donates it, and donated audio is anonymous and unlinkable as described above — it carries no name, no account, and no identifier connecting it to any child, adult, or device.
5. Legal bases (GDPR)
Where the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation applies:
- Consent is the legal basis for cry donation. You give it by explicitly sharing a recording, and you can withdraw it for all future sharing at any time via "Never share" (withdrawal cannot reach recordings already sent, because they are anonymous and unlinkable).
- Performance of a contract is the legal basis for processing purchase receipts to deliver the Plus features you bought.
On-device processing of microphone audio is under your direct control via the operating system's microphone permission and does not involve any transmission to us.
6. International transfers
Donated recordings are uploaded to a server located in the European Union. Purchase validation via RevenueCat may involve processing in the United States under appropriate safeguards.
7. Your choices
- Set the sharing mode to Ask each time / Share automatically / Never share in the app's settings.
- Choose "Never share" to stop all future donations and delete queued, unsent recordings from your device.
- Revoke the microphone permission at any time in your device settings (analysis will no longer work).
- Delete all local data by deleting the app's data or uninstalling it.
- Manage or cancel subscriptions in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the updated version at this address with a new effective date. Material changes to what the app shares will also be reflected in the app's own consent screens before they apply to you.
